Question
When I first got him I started feeding him only dry food. Once he got a little older I started giving him caned food with a little mixture of the dry. But, I'm interested in knowing if we should start to limit the amount of caned food that I've been feeding him?

Answer
Olanda

I am not a big fan of canned food more than a couple of times a month.  In general, it makes it really easy to overfeed, and it also tends to cause tartar.

Cairns (and other small terriers) are particularly prone to gaining weight and having bad teeth as they age... and it's something you can avoid by balancing the amount you use starting now.

Plus you won't end up with a spoiled dog who will not eat kibble at all.

If you feel like a special treat, a little scrambled egg or a tablespoon of yogurt or cottage cheese is just as good or better for him than most of the canned foods on the market.  You can also use things like reduced fat cheezit crackers and mini carrots as treats starting now to help build good habits that will be extra handy when he's 8-10 and older !

Have fun ! You have years of a happy fun life ahead of you.

PS - Head for obedience school right away. He's about to enter the teenage years and you will want to stay a step or 2 ahead of him as those hormones hit (yes, even if he's neutered)
