potty training a yorkiepoo

Question
QUESTION: i bought a 9 week yorkiepoo 4 days ago and was told to litter train her.  i'm not having great luck with it. sometimes she goes in it and other times not. sometimes she pee a foot away from the box. we have a whirlpool tub that i put her in during the day. it's about 4'by 4' and i can get her litter box, a blanket, and food and water in it and she still has room to move around. i leave for work at 6:45am and don't get home until 5:00pm. my husband comes home for lunch at 11:00 am and plays with her a bit but he doesn't try to get her to go. she sleeps with us at night and hasn't went while we've slept. but i am getting frustrated with the fact that sometimes she uses the box and other times she doesn't. what can i do?

ANSWER: Jean,
Both you and your husband NEED to be consistent. Take her to her box and put her in it. Lots of praise when she does her job.  Give her a command such as "go Potty".  If she doesn't want to stay there put a lead on her and when she tries to get out the lead will keep her from doing so.  If she is peeing outside the box when you are not home then you need to make her area smaller.  Just enough room to sleep and her box.  That way she can't go anywhere else and still be able to sleep.  Dogs don't soil there beds.
Yorkies are known to be hard to house train.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: when we're at work she doesn't go anywhere but in the litter box. but when we're at home, we give her the run of the house and then we follow her everywhere. and that's when she'll either go right where she's at when the urge hits her, or if i bring her to the litter box and just sit there for a long time, that's when sometimes she'll go into the box and go and other times she'll pee two or three feet away from the box. i really praise her and give her a small treat when  she goes in the box. also, we live in Minnesota so i was told it's too cold for her to go out in the winter and even right now because she's so small. but is litter training the right way to go? I'm surprised to hear yorkies are hard to train, I've read several sites on the web that said they're very smart and easy to train. so I thought maybe I just have a subborn one.

Answer
Don't follow her around.  Put a lead on her and attach her to yourself.  She shouldn't have free roam right now till she is totally potty trained.  When she goes to make a mistake you have the lead on her and you can correct her by saying NO!  Then pick her up and put her in her box to finish or let her know thats where she should go.
Its just going to take time.  It can be done.

Good luck
