Hi Beth! I recently adopted a cairn terrier mix from the pound, at least I
believe she is a cairn mix - she is a dark brindle, with a full blown cairn coat,
and soft undercoat. The vet estimates she is about a year and a half, and she
weighs almost 7 pounds. Other than her size, the real difference from a pure
breed seems to be a pointier nose, the white bit on her chest and feet, and of
course, her size. Anyway, lol..I live in a smaller city that does not have very
many dog groomers, and the one's that I took her to for a consult had no
knowledge of a cairn coat, and told me that since she had the undercoat, she
must have been shaved before, and I should just shave her. I am therefore
going to take care of her coat myself - but as it is a fully blown coat, I am
having a hard time knowing the true shape that she should be. I tried
stripping some of her coat today by hand, and she didn't seem to mind at all,
but I am worried that I am going to make her lopsided!! Is there anything out
there that could give me a good idea of how to get a full blown coat back in
to shape?
I have attached a few pics of my little girl.
Thanks in advance for your response,
Sarah

What a little doll she is ! While I have seen a purebred cairn be 7.6 lbs at a decent weight and fully mature, the white is a dead giveaway to being a mix.
Now, as to coat care, there are easy ways to get around having to hand strip her completely. I usually do the ears, face and tail by hand, but do the body with a Mars Coat King.
Here's a link about grooming a cairn that I think you will find helpful:

and here's what the Caot King is (though there are plenty of places to get one)

This makes the work easy since you use it just like a brush.
If there's anything else you would like to know, just ask....
Enjoy the new kiddo - she's very very cute.
