Question
I just got a new Yorkshire Terrier.  He is 11 weeks old.  When is it
safe to get him a leash and collar?  And, how many times a day and
how much food and snacks are appropriate?

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Suzzanne,
My pups soon as born get a ribbon on each necks then to a cat collar then as growing to a fine pup collar.  They are then taught to lead at or by 8 weks old.  They are most ready for their homes to flight out or be picked up, so your pup should be well on its way to leading nicely and collar trained.
Get an adjustable collar and leash, take the pup out and if he pulls a Nutty, let him go just hang onto the leash and do not give in on the stupid things they try to do.
Soon he will quit, call him to u by little pulls towards u then pet and hug him.  Keep doing this the first day the second day try walking some with him following by coaching him to COME HERE, pet and praise until he learns to walk at your left side as you walk.
Do NOT let him learn to lead you, teach him to HEEL by staying at your left knee of walking step by step, if he starts to pull or see something put him in the SIT command to STAY and then procede to heel step by step, if he pulls stop, sit and wait.  then go step by step until he gets the idea he is not to pull or try to run after a dog or whatever.
DO not overtrain on a pup more than ten minutes sessions for they get bored quickly.  But train daily and get a long rope cut of twenty feet or a leash bought and teach him to COME HERE, roll him into you as u call him to  COME HERE, then pet and praise, do this daily also.
TEACH  the SIT command, by pushing on his rump as u say kinda louder SIT DOWN, the pet and praise, etc.  Do all the commands sit, stay, lay, down, come here, heel or lead, shake, roll over, etc.  You can teach a dog anyting with patience and love and not long lessons each day something he can accomplish then move to another then repeat daily what u think he learned to master it well and teach or review the new one your working on soon your dog will be a  master of all then do short stay at sit, and long stays at sit.  Then work at short stays at lay then long stays at lay.  Work and your Obedience training will make a most perfect gentlemen to love and make sure he is walked daily among dogs, people and kids, let people pet his back NOT his face.  He will make a super pet if u do this work on him.  Get the book or video of the Monks of New Skete in N.Y at www.dogsbestfriend.com  great advice on training.

Kind Regards and bEst of luck
