Question
Hi. Two weeks ago my parents brought home two puppies. They are 3/4 pomeranian and 1/4 jack russell terrier, so they look just like poms, but have floppy ears. I realize that your "specialty" is with terriers, but maybe you know the answer to my question anyways. Well, for the past week I've noticed that one of the puppies has been getting more and more vertical ears. At first they were completely floppy (from the terrier in him) but now his ears are completely vertical, whereas the other puppy, his brother, has not changed at all. I am curious as to why this would happen. And how. Thank you for your reply.

Answer
JEN,
IT IS MOST LIKELY IN ONE OF THE PARENTS GENES TO HAVE ERRECT EARS.  IT IS HARD TO TELL EXACTLY SINCE THEY ARE OF MIX BREEDS WHY, BUT I THINK THAT WOULD BE CUTE.
EARS ARE WEIRD TO EXPLAIN AS MOST ALL THINGS RUN IN DOGS GENES, IT JUST CAME OUT IN THE ONE PUP, JUST AS LONG COATS IN SHEPHERDS, IN SIX LITTERS, THIS PAST YEAR FINALLY GOT ONE LONG COAT IN N.Y. SHE LOVES HIM, BUT THE GENE SLIPPED THROUGH, SO WHO KNOWS, JUST LOVE THEM AND ENJOY THE PUPS, THE JR. PART WILL KEEP U BUSY FOR THEY HAVE TONS OF ENERGY SO PREPARE DAILY WALKS MAYBE TWO OR THREE.

KIND REGARDS
