Question
Hello,  I was wondering if you could explain why my Jack Russell terrier of 5 years bit me (he drew blood).  I haven't spent much time with him for the past couple of months because of school, but he usually gets attention from my brother as well as my parents who all live with me.  He bit me when I was trying to get his bone away from him.  However, I had been doing this for years with his toys, bones, etc.  I even would take his bowl from him while he was still eating to show that I was the leader.  Unfortunately, the rest of my family spoils him and don't really assert themselves.  I know that's bad, but why would he bite me, the leader?  Is it because I don't spend as much time now and regards me as outside the pack or something?  Help!

Answer
Anthony,
You have nailed it. You have abandoned your place and let the family become the pack and he is the new leader. Typical terrier behavior. Give them an inch and they will take a mile.
You will have to make the effort to get back your standing. Sounds like you know what you have to do. Back to square one. If you have time over the holidays start spending some quality time with him and keep him with you - not just with your family. No free lunches for this wild one. Make him work for everything and then give him lots of praise - but only from you.
good luck!
