Question
hi i was wondering if u could give me some advice about my pet how can i put it ? he is a little bit nuts! i cannot let him off a leash as he runs off and does not come backto me i have a 6foot fence arond my back garden so he does not get out . if our front door is open slightly he dives out and jumps over the front garden wall and doesnt come back till he has run me ragged. he goes for walks with my husband but i cant take him as he pulls on his leash too much i would love to take him for a walk but cant handle him as well as my baby in his pram what can i do? i must tell you i got him from our local rspca kennels and he was mistreated before he went there  but he has been fine with us apart from chasing bikes and cars . he is a good house dog i feel safe on a night due to him as i dont think no one dare come in door he sounds ferrocious as he barks a bit but he isnt he is just a big softie and love s to be stroked .he is 5 yrs old  he is a mixture of a few terriers what do u suugest? many thanks

Answer
HI MRS SPEIGHT
THE DOG NEEDS TO BE ENROLLED IN SOME OBEDIENCE CLASSES FOR A FIRM HANDS ON EXPERIENCE.  TERRIERS ARE SO FULL OF SPIRIT SOMETIMES THEY NEVER GET ENOUGH.  MAYBE YOU KNOW OF A FIELD U COULD GO TO AND LET HIM RUN ON A FIFTY FOOT ROPE. HE HAS GOTTEN AWAY SO MANY TIMES, HE KNOWS THIS IS HIS TRICK OF FREEDOM, MOST LIKELY IS WHY HE WAS GIVEN AWAY.
HE WAS NEVER TRAINED TO DO ANYTHING PROPER, JUST HIS WAY.
KEEP A LEASH ON HIM ALL THE TIME EVEN IN THE HOUSE, SO U CAN GRAB HIM OR STEP ON THE LEASH IF U OPEN THE DOOR.  ONCE HE KNOWS HIS LIMITS AND IT IS STOPPED, HE WILL QUIT.  BUT HE NEEDS TO LEARN HOW TO HEEL AT YOUR LEFT KNEE AND WALK, NOT HE WALK U.  I HATE TO SEE DOGS LEADING PEOPLE, THIS IS WRONG.
TEACH HIM THE SIT COMMAND, WHEN HE KNOWS IT TAKE HIM OUT ON A LEASH, IF HE PULLS, PUT HIM IN THE SIT COMMAND, TAKE ONE STEP, IF HE PULLS, SIT, THEN STEP, ETC.  WHEN HE DECIDES IT IS NOT WORTH PULLING HE WILL HAVE TO SIT, HE WILL QUIT.  GIVE HIM A TREAT EACH TIME HE LISTENS ON LEASH.  PET AND PRAISE ALSO.
HE JUST NEEDS TONS OF EXERCISE AND DISAPLINE AND A GOOD LEADER TO TEACH RIGHT FROM WRONG.  U MIGHT ALSO FILL A WATER SPRAY BOTTLE WITH A TAD BIT OF VINEGAR IN IT, IF HE TRIES THE DOOR DASH WITH THE LEASH AND YOUR FOOT ON IT, SPRAY HIS FACE AND HOLLER: NO NO.   THAT WILL SHOW HIM A THING OR TOO AND IT IS HUMANE TRAINING.  HE MUST LEARN OR HE WILL GET RUN OVER OR U MIGHT GET A FINE.
