Question
Hello, I am wanting to get Jack russle terrier pup this coming spring but am wondering would my dog get alone with this pup? she loves my friends(with whom I'm living) golden retriver/yellow lab cross adn adores my mothers two bichon/shiztuz crosses(they come to visit offen), I am not too sure how the goldenX acts around my mothers dogs so I will have to do a supervised test to see if she'd try attack a tiny pup, the goldenX is spayed, my mothers two dogs are spayed as well... my lab isnt yet spayed, she is 11 months and I'm going to have her done two months after getting the pup. My questions are.........

When I bring the pup home should I keep him seprate from the others for the first few hours to alow him to get to know his habitat and me better before being stressed more by the two large dogs?

Should the pup be male or female? everyone says it'd be better to get a male as one of the females may decid to challange each other some day and the rusults wouldn't be very pretty... what do you think?

I have heard that jack russles can be aggressive towards other dogs...... wouldn't they get along if they grew up together?

My friend also has two cats.... how would the pupy get alone with them?

The pupy will be allowed to go ni the living room, kitchen, bedroom & dinning area how do I puppy proof these areas?

I have never owned a small breed puppy with a larger dog..... let allow two...... how is this going to work? I mean am I always gonig to ahev to be following the pup around to be sure one of the larger dogs doesnt step on it or nip at it?

Is it safe to allow the other dogs to play with it?

Thank you for any help in advance

Answer
Hi Ask
JR pups grow up to be high strung Terriers that require tons of daily exercise, things to learn, they love to learn and do things.
If not they get into many things, chewing down the back porch, etc.
As far as an adult with a puppy, u must watch every move, take it slow and easy when introducing a new puppy to an adult.
Jealously is the biggest problem, and it takes only seconds for the adult to grab its neck or stomach and its all over.
Slow walks together, love them both together, do not give the pup too much attention if front of the adult.  JUst be very careful and slow.  Gait off the adult for a week until it knows the little one is going to be part of the family also.
Or gait off the puppy and lay papers at the door it will exit to potty.  There is nothing wrong with paper training in winter especially.
God Bless and The best of Luck and if u need further help, let me know.  Also, cats are so quick to remove or injure a puppies eyes, so keep them apart till the puppy knows to let them alone, puppies exoplore alot.

warm regards
