Question
I have been working on my Scottish terrier's coat, he was groomed with a 4F prior to me starting on handplucking..his coat is coming in wiry in some areas more than others..on his dorsal croup area it is very thick..I am rotating his coat every 3 weeks..but today I found that mocking out the undercoat help alot, I hope I did not cause any further damage..coming in too thick, what can I do? thanks for the help..any recommendation on knives, I am using finger cots..and stone from CC for now, I have some knives, but I am only using to mock out, I am afraid to cut the hair rather than pull out causing any friz..help

Answer
You didn't say how old your scottie is and how many times he had been clippered before you started trying to revert the coat.
It sounds like you are coming along as well as to be expected tho. Most dogs have a thicker growth on the rump so it needs more rolling than the rest. The neck is also a heavy growth area. You will see this the more you work on him. Keep "mucking" (not mocking) the coat regularly. As you've found it helps.
You may cut a bit with the knives but try pulling fewer hairs so you can recognize the different feel when the hair releases from the follicle. There are so many knives on the market these days it really depends on how you learn to use them and what your ultimate goal is for the coat.
If you are showing the dog it's a whole different ballgame than pet stripping which allows you alot more lee way in fudging the final product not acceptable in the show ring. Personally I use Hauptner knives because I have so many dogs to do a day and they just work better for me although to the unskilled you can cut a lot of hair rather than plucking. I also take advantage of the Mars Coat King to muck out the jacket in between. Just don't over rake with it or you can do damage-
Just keep picking away at it regularly and you will get the wire jacket back if he has the coat to begin with. It always grows back and you can only learn by doing it.
good luck
