Question
Hi my name is Louare, and I need some advice on what to do for my Yorkie when she is giving birth? I have never done this before so I am a litte scared. She went into heat around the first week of December but we are not sure when she will have them. I know it takes 9 weeks for her to have them but we are not sure when she got locked up. Today is February 2, 2008 and I have felt the babies moving inside her for about 1 week now. When do you think they will come? What do I need for them durning the birth and after they are born? Please help me.

Answer
Lourae -

I take it from your note that she has not been seen by a vet ?

I think you should take her to a vet on Monday and have her examined. The vet will be able to tell you how she is doing, how far along she is, etc.  Additionally, vet care is vital to ensure that the puppies are healthy, and will need care themselves once they are born.

You will know when she is going into labor because she will look for a quiet place and will pant.  You should consider making her a soft bed in a quiet place out of things that are easy to clean (towels, etc)

You have steep learning curve ahead of you. I am not a vet, and do not breed dogs, so I have not done this myself. I suspect you can find someone else on this web page who is much more experienced in the whelping of puppies.
