Question
I have a 6 month old Staffy bull Terrier bitch, since she was about 3 months old the hair on the top of her head has started thinning out. Over the last few weeks it has got worse, i consulted my vet who didn't really help, he advised it may be the lice that all dogs have from young, and gave me some more flea treatment "spot on" to control it, however this hasn't really done anything and it seems to be getting worse.

Answer
Hello Chris,
Frankly this is a vet question but to point you in the correct direction let me say this, you must work with diet first. Terrier breeds are infamous for food allergies. Research raw/grain free diets and start with that. Refrain from using rawhide chews. Bathe the dog frequently with DILUTED mild, canine formulated shampoo- fragrance free. Once a week doesn't hurt when you are in a crisis but at least once a month. The old attitude that a bath is bad for a dog is at the least- passe. Supplement the diet with Omega 3 oils- unscented wild salmon oil highly recommended.
Clean all bedding regularly, weekly if necessary. Pay attention to environmentally obvious contaminants; cleaning products, fabrics, grasses, pollen, etc. Where you walk you dog should be inspected for these things.
Boredom is another culprit- does she rub her head on a crate, furniture, rug, door? A tired terrier is a happy healthy terrier. They mellow out around 2 1/2- 3. Can you persevere??? Exercise Exercise Exercise!
hope this gives you some direction to follow
Happy New Year and good luck with your pup!
