age a terrier can hold her bladder

Question
I have a 1/2 terrier (I"m not sure what type) and 1/2 beagle mix. She is 6 months old and about 14 lbs.  She is trained to use the bathroom outdoors but still wets in the crate while I'm at work or overnight.  I don't mind for now but at what age can I expect this little one to start holding her bladder for longer periods of time.  Also do you recommend she stay crated after this time or should she be allowed to get rid of the crate and roam with my other 5 yr old shepherd mix while I'm gone?  She tends to eat tissue/paper/remote controls etc that is in her reach now if I'm not careful. Thank you for your time and assistance.

Answer
Hi Janet, In your rating of my response your wrote, "The response and answer were great but she didn't really answer my question. At what age should she be able to hold her bladder for longer periods of time."

Sorry that you feel that I did not answer your question, when I wrote, "By 6 months of age, most puppies should be able to hold their water for 6 hrs (such as 10:00pm until 4:00am).  If you are crating him for longer periods, this might be the reason for his "accidents".

According to some books I have read, a puppy should be able to hold his bladder for one hour for each month of age. Example: A six month puppy should be able to hold his bladder for 6 hrs.

I hope this answer better addresses your question, and please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance.  Sincerely, Penny D.
