Question
hi, i have a nursing lakeland who has been more than happy with the easy and short birth(i helped in this)she is a good mother and everything as been going okay , but recently she as decided to attack our 1yearold patterdale terrier for no apparent resion(we have not let her near the puppies and they are kept in different rooms when we are not at home or in bed)the younger one as just come into season her first time and the lakeland is a first time mum, my question is should i keep them apart until mum gets more used and will they be friends again like they used to be?(they went every where together with no problems) i know she has to defend her pups but the younger one as not even been near them i is quite scarey to see them fighting as they have always been good friends, thank you for any advise

Answer
There is no way these two bitches should be anywhere near each other while one has puppies.  The nursing Lakie will try to kill the other bitch.  They should not be allowed back together until the puppies have been well weaned and then you should take them away from home and re introduce them on neutral ground.  Keeping two bitches is a challenge - I should know I have five! - and once bitches fall out you will never get them back together again without flares up for no apparent reason.  It is like living on a knife edge not only for them but us humans as well.
