Question
I have a 2 yr old silky terrier. I've only had him about 2 weeks now (that i got from a private owner). When I first brought him home ( i live on a first floor apartment), he was doing everything right. (Including: Going potty outside and not barking.) Since then he's been going pee inside our apartment at night; in our kitchen and barking randomly. I still take him outside and still manages to go to the bathroom inside. as well at barking whenever (even when people are not around the front door to our apartment. I've tried putting bleach in the spot that he goes pee, and nothing helps. My 2 questions are this?: What can I do to stop peeing in the kitchen, and what can I do limit his barking in the apartment all the time. (Even when we are home)?

Answer
Hi Jennifer, Is he intact or neutered? There are pet deterrents products that work better than bleach. Get some piddle pads (cheap at walmart or publix, or online), put them down where he piddles in the house and get him used to them. Then give him lots of praise when he used them!  Move them closer and closer to the door.  It usually works once you move the pads outside, and worse case is that he has to use little piddle pads. Tell me,  how do you respond to his barking? Do you yell at him?  If so, he thinks that you are barking with him as part of his herd. When he barks, quietly go to him and reassure him that it is okay. Worse case scenario is to get him an antibark training collar (they are cheap on eBay, to train him when it is appropriate to bark and when it is uncalled for.  Hope this helps. Leave me some feedback and thanks for asking me.  Regards, Susan
