Question
Hi Pat,
Thank you for the answer.  Now I am worried.  We just got the dog today, he is real curious of my 5 month old.  He wants to be in his face all the time.  When we picked him up from the vet they said he had a bacterial infection in his fecal matter so he is on an antibiotic and he has kennel cough.  They said that the bacterial infection can be passed on to the kids.  He kept licking my babys face so I smacked him in the mouth, not hard.  He raised his teeth at me and growled.  That kind of scared me.  Then whenever my baby cries he starts barking, I don't know if he is trying to be protective or what.  What do you think?-------------------------

Question -
We just adopted a terrier, who has some Jack Russell but not for sure.  My question is how are they around children?  The dog is a male, roughly 3 yrs old.  When I played with him at the shelter he seemed pretty nice.  I have a 3 yr old and a 5 month old.  Do you have any advice?

HI REBECCA
I WOULD BE VERY CAREFUL GETTING ONE THIS OLD WITH SMALL CHILDREN.  THE TERRIER BREEDS ARE SUPER HIGH STRUNG, VERY ANXIOUS AND SNIPPY.  I HAVE OWNED THEM AND THEY WERE TERRIBLE WITH SMALL KIDS, BUT THEN I HAD NO SMALL KIDS EITHER SO DID NOT EXPOSE THEM TO CHILDREN SMALL.
I WOULD NOT BE QUICK TO CORRECT FOR A WHILE TILL IT FITS IN AND JUST KEEP A CLOSE EYE FOR THE JACK RUSSELL IN IT MIGHT BE A REAL PROBLEM, THAT BREED NEEDS ALOT TO LEARN AND BE KEPT MOST BUSY LEARNING AND EXERCISING.  TO ME THAT BREED IS SOMEWHAT CRAZY TO HAVE AS PETS UNLESS U CAN GET SOME TRAINING HELP.
I WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK AND JUST BE SOME PATIENT FOR NOW AND WATCH CAREFULLY.

REBECCA I AM ALSO VERY WORRIED, THIS IS MOST LIKELY WHAT THIS POOR DOG WAS FOR ADOPTION, ILL, POOR GENETICS IN ITS GENES MOST LIKELY GOING TO COST U THE REST OF ITS LIFE.
IF I WERE YOU....PERSONALLY I WOULD RETURN THIS LITTLE ONE FOR A BETTER HOME WITHOUT CHILDREN.  NOW YOUR CHILD WILL GET THIS INFECTION.  THE DOG IS NOT HEALTHY AND I WOULD NOT KEEP IT.  REALLY I WOULD NOT IT NEEDS WITHOUT CHILDREN, TERRIERS ARE A HANDFUL, HIPER AND TIMES JUST CRAZY.  SORRY FOR BEING BLUNT, BUT I HAVE HAD THEM AND I KNOW.  I FEAR FOR THE KIDS AND ITS ILLNESS GOING TO BE  A LIFETIME THING FOR U DO NOT KNOW THE PARENTS AND THE GENES IN IT FOR GOD KNOWS WHAT VET EXPENSE U WILL INCURR IN ITS LIFETIME.??

YOUR BETTER TO PICK THE MEDIUM SIZED DOGS LIKE SHEPHERDS IF U KNOW THE BREEDER OR WHERE THE DOG CAME FROM IF IT WAS TOTALLY TEMPERMENT TESTED.  SHEPHERDS LOVE CHILDREN AND ARE NATURAL PROTECTORS FROM LOVE AND BONDING TO KIDS IN THE HOME.  LET ME KNOW IF U NEED FURTHER HELP.
