Trying to get my Cairn to use a dogy door.

I have a 4 month old cairn he is crate trained but I hate to leave him in there for 6-8 hours a day I was wondering if installing a doggy door that leads to a well fenced backyard would be a reasonable alternative to leaving him in his crate?

I strongly recommend that you continue to use the crate.  Given enough time, a cairn can, and most likely will, dig out of any fence.

Your dog does not mind being in the crate and will likely get into some kind of trouble if left to his own devices.
