Yorkshire Terrier frequent urination

Question
Hi, we have a 7 year old male Yorkie who for the past 6 months or so is
waking me up to go outside and urinate. He has a doggy door, but won't use
it in the middle of the night. Just recently, he gets me up twice a night. If I
don't get up, he'll urinated on the carpet by the door, so he obviously needs
to go. I've tried reducing his water intake, and try not to let him have water
after 7 or 8 at night. We always go to bed at 11, and we take him out right
before. Prior to this, he never got us up during the night. Is this normal, or
does it usually indicate a bladder infection or issue?  Do I dare try to re-train
him now to use a potty pad? thanks

You need to rule out medical causes for this since it's a new behavior.  It's always a good idea to rule out medical things when an adult dog with well establushed habits changes them.

Please let me know how you make out with the vet and if he doesn;t find anything, then we can try to address it behaviorally.  In the meantime, you may want to crate him at night.

All our fingers, toes, paws and tails are crossed that everything is OK !
