QuestionYay, I actually found a person that specializes in cairns! Anyways, I had a few questions..
Right now, I'm feeding my apprx. 15 week old cairn Royal Canin puppy food... and I was wondering if you had any suggestions on the "right" food for cairns in particular.
Another question:
How much food should i feed my cairn at his age (right now i feed 3/4 of a cup a day) and what should his weight be (right now he is about 7 pounds).
AnswerJeff -
Well, you have chosen a wonderful breed ! I want to both answer your food questions and prepare you for the future with a dog of this breed, especially if you have never had a terrier before !
Here's a link to a great description of the breed and it includes all the advice I could give you for overall success with a cairn in your life:

You can also find lots of other information about the breed, grooming, etc on that web site. (Can you tell I'm a member of this rescue?)
Food - I'm so glad you're asking while your kiddo is young. There are many brands that are suitable for cairns, but I always recommend reading ingredients religiously. No corn, no wheat, no soy and no by-products. Royal Canine is a brand that often works well for cairns. I personally feed Eagle Pack.
The amount is also a good question since you will need to watch your dog's weight once he enters adulthood. I feed twice a day - it helps them maintain proper blood sugar levels and avoids sour stomachs. Most adult cairns should east about 1/3 cup of kibble twice a day.
Please remember that treats need to be caluclated into the amount fed each day. If you're doing a lot of training, you will need to reduce the meausrements. I also always make a point to train before a meal. If we have an agility class in the evening, I don't feed til we get home instead of right after work.
Enjoy your little man !
