Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Pit Bull Terriers?

20 11:20:03

Question
Hello, I am not sure if you are the right person to ask this questions but I figured since you owned terriers you might be able to help. I recently rescued an 8 week old Stafforshire Bull Terrier mix puppy. He is a wonderful male, black and white, mostly white, with grey eyes. I have extensive personal experience with training and have already taught him to sit, stay, down, fetch, hand shake, and come. I have been told by some people that Staffords are the same as Pit Bull terriers, is this true? I tried to look this up on the internet but seem to also find conflicting answers. Some people demand they are the same breed while others say they are similar but completely different. Any help clarifing this question would be great.

While technically, both of these breeds are more aptly called "bully breeds" as opposed to true terriers, I can answer your question.

The typical pit bull was developed out of the American Staffordshire and in most ways are indistinguishable from each other. "Amstaffs" are a breed that is often recognized for also having trouble with other dogs.

I'm not surprised by your ability to quickly train your new friend. They are very focussed.

The trick with this breed is to socialize, socialize, socialize.... Obedience classes, play groups, etc. Both with people and other dogs.

Part of the problem is that same intense focus on you - they want to protect you and keep you all to themselves.

Good luck !
