Question
hi, i have a 4 month old teacup yorkie named oscar. he is in the middle of being potty trained and i take him out frequently. well every time he goes out he will go pee but never poop. as soon as he gets in from outside 5 minutes later he goes poop on the floor. so to keep it off the floor i am using diapers for when he is inside. how come he wont poop outside, and what can i do to get him fully potty trained outside?

Answer
Brooke,
I hear this all the time and it is always the same. I am going to be frank.
A yorkie is a toy breed dog- not a true terrier. 4 months old is really young to expect alot especially if he has not been neutered yet. He is just beginning to experience his boundaries and territory. It is often not realistic to expect training to work while they are teething as well.
take him out to potty 30 -45 minutes after he eats when his peristalsis begins. You MUST be consistent- it is the only way it works.
Let me guess- your dog is so adorable everything he does is precious. Until he poops where you don't want him to. That's not so cute.
You MUST be consistent or you will send mixed messages that a puppy does not understand.
Diapers are not the answer and they must wreak havoc on his hair. You will end up having him all matted from washing him and then you won't understand why the first time you get him groomed they have to shave all the hair off....
Lose the diapers, walk after feeding, use a weewee pad. Get him neutered soon and take a deep breath. Toy dogs are notoriously hard to potty train- not because they can't be but because the owner is too infatuated by how cute they are and find it difficult to be dominant. They can take over your household if you don't get a grip quickly. Try to do some research- and take a puppy training class.
Enjoy your puppy and take it easy. They get it eventually.
good luck.
