Question
Beth, in response to your response... I have two Cairn Terrier, both neutered.
They are not small Cairns.  The male has no weight problems but the female
can only think of food.  It's like she has an eating disorder.  I feed them twice
a day 1/4 C Blue Buffalo small bites with ground, cooked chicken breasts.
Sometimes they get a carrot or an almond or a dog chew.  She is still
overweight and only 2 years old.  Any advise?  Do you think blue Buffalo is
ok?   Thanks, Patty

Answer
Patty -

Blue Buffalo is a very fine food.  However, given that you're supplementing with chicken, you may want to cut back your girlie's kibble by a little if she's carrying too much weight.

I also recommend things like sweet potatoes (not regular ones since they are poisonous in quantity), winter squash or pumpkin as being effective at filling tummies without adding calories.  In fact a little canned pumkpin (plain - not pie filling) may help her feel fuller and more satisfied.

If she still seems to be carrying more weight than makes sense, please have her thyroid checked. It's very easy and inexpensive to treat if it's not working properly.

Let me know how you make out.
