aggressive behavior for a Jack Russell

Question
We adopted a JR.  We have had him for 1.5 years.  He is a sweet dog.  Lately, he is growling and snappy at us.  It is usually when he has been asleep.  He has also started to pee in the house.  I have just started working from home so I am with him all day.  Yesterday he was under my desk, I touched him with my foot and he tried to bite me.  After he realized what happened he started shaking and cowering.  He has not been fixed and we are thinking of doing it, he is 3.  Help me.  Diane

Answer
Not neutered ???

YES - this maybe part of the problem, but certainly you should have a full physical exam of him since it is essential to rule out illness.

The most common reason for a relatively sudden change in behavior is illness or injury.  They can't tell us what is wrong, so we have to find out.

Have him neutered, but realize it takes up to 6 months for the hormone levels to reduce to that of a neutered dog.

I would also advise some formal obedience work if you haven't already. It's always especially important with terriers.... not to mention it would be a lot easier for a trainer or other knowledgeable person to make suggestions if they know the dog a little - and can see the nature of your relationship with him.

Any way you choose to handle it, nip it in the bud right now !

Best wishes
