Running with a Yorkie

Question
Hello,

My wife has a Yorkie which means that I now do to. Recently I took the little guy for a run (about 3 miles) and he led the way the whole time. He really seemed to love it, we walked a couple of times but I think it was because he lost interest and was checking out the wildlife.
My wife and her coddling family believe it is dangerous for the Yorkie to go on runs as he is so small. Can you offer anything to dispute their claims that this dog is too small to be taken on jogs?

Answer
Well, John -

Certainly it's not bad for a yorkie to go on a jog, but I would certainly ask that you consider the training of the dog's muscle tone just as you do your own.  A 3 mile run for you equates to perhaps 20 miles for the dog because of his size.

I'm also assuming this is a fairly young dog with no known health problems.

Just as you would build up your running distance and speed for yourself, I would advise doing the same for this little guy.

Taking those factors into consideration, and assuming you have him on a leash at all times (attached to a harness, not his collar), I see no reason why the 2 of you can't go enjoy the great outdoors.

OH, and I also forgot - weather permitting. Snow, ice and the melting products people use are terrible on a dog's paws.
