Question
hi please can you advise me about our 24 month old labrador ben .
he's a brilliant dog that will sit and wait for his diner and will not touch it until told /he gets more love from the my family and 2 children 11 and 13 year olds he even gets on well with our tom cat  but recentley every now and than when hes on our sofa and you take away his blanket or disturb him he starts growling and when i get the children to move away and then i approuch him he growls at me and sometimes shows his teeth .this has happened before and i usually make him lay on the floor and dont make a fuss of him / i am just concerned a normally good dog might bite when moody so do you think it would make sence having him castorated kind regards steve

Answer
Having him castrated is a good first step.  It may not be enough.  He may need additional training.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
