Hello, thank you so much for taking the time to read this e-mail. I recently acquired a 2 year old yellow lab. I do not know if he is spayed/or neutered but please don't disregard this question. The new addition to our family is named Jack. Jack keeps sniffing my private area and then proceeds to start humping. I have never experienced this before and I am quite shocked. I just got yesterday.
AnswerI like to know if a dog is neutered because it can greatly affect such behaviors. It isn't a cure all, but a big help. Intact male labs are quite obvious, they have their testicles hanging down between their back legs easily visible. If he is still intact, schedule a vet visit and discuss neutering him. I can't promise it will solve the problem. some dogs continue such behaviors even if neutered.
It has more to do status than sex. Even if neutered, he may still need training. The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
Dogs are blythe spirits, having none of our human inhibitions. Don't be shocked at their behavior.
