7 1/2 mo yellow lab...will he get much bigger?

Question
Hello,

Max, our 7 1/2 month old yellow lab is smaller than other labs that I have seen.  We were just at the vet yesterday and he weighs 48 lbs (actually the scale was fluctuating between 48 and 50).  I am guessing that his height is around 20 inches (at the shoulders).  We did have him neutered at 21 1/2 weeks.  Yesterday I asked the vet tech how much larger she thought he would get and she said that he may get to be around 60 lbs but is going to be a smaller lab.  He is a purebred and was the runt of the litter (his littermates definitely had blockier heads and such).

Do you think he will get much larger or at 7 1/2 MOS. is he pretty much done growing?

Thank you so much!
Dawn

Answer
I think the 60 pounds the vet tech said is the maximum.  His growth should really slow now.  You may even need to cut back on what you are feeding him.  His joints are still developing, and the less weight, the better.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest.
You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them.  Each dog is
different.  Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog
must have its food adjusted to its individual needs. Here is a link to a good illustrated guide,

Some Labs are just small. Our Xanthe was 35 pounds at 4 months.  I doubt she will hit 50 pounds as a lean 1 year old.
