Black Lab age/weight concern

Question

Okimasu
I have a black lab mix. He has a small white patch on his chest and his tail's about as long as his body. He's definitely mostly labrador though. He weighs about 50 lbs. and about 2 ft. tall at the shoulders. I got him when he was 5 weeks old and according to the lady we got him from, he's about 6 months old now. Every time somebody sees him, they say he's humongous for his age. Do you think this is correct and legit? If not, what do you think he might be mixed with?

Answer
There is no telling what he's mixed with. I have seen folks do those breed DNA tests that you can buy on-line or even at Petco, their dogs have clearly looked like 2 different breeds, and the results come up totally different.  They are only about $60 and it might give you some idea.

He is rather tall for his age.  The lab standard allows males to be 24 1/2 inches and I have seen purebred bigger (folks just don't pay attention to breeding to the standard unfortunately).  The white patch on the chest is legit for a lab.  The tail seems to long.  It shouldn't extend past the hock for a true lab.
