Question
I have a Lab who is 2 yrs. old and I need to know how much I should be feeding her.  The vet says my 3 cups a day are OK, but a breeder and trainer as well as a boarding facility all told me that is too much.  My beautiful friend is starting to pack on added weight, despite excercise.

Answer
If she is gaining weight, you need to cut back.  I am a little disappointed your vet isn't saying so.  Many Labs need 3 cups or more, but that doesn't mean it is right for yours.  Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. Here is a link to a good illustrated guide, http://www.longliveyourdog.com/twoplus/RateYourDog.aspx  If you can't easily feel the riBs cut back to 2 1/2 cups.  If she still isn't losing, cut back to 2.
