Question
I adopted a choc lab from the East TN Lab Rescue. She is spayed and 3 years old. Her health is excellent but her weight is a major problem. She weighs around 135lbs. Our vet put her on a diet of Science Diet Light, 2 1/2 cups twice daily. She stayed so very hungry it was sad and did little for her weight. She plays in our large fenced in yard with our doberman most of the day. In summer she swims in our pool constantly. She is an active dog for the most part. WHAT can I do? I know this will cause heart problems along with many other health related issues.
Thank you for your help!!!!

Answer
Labs love to eat.  It is tough disciplining them.  Not only their heart, but overweight is hard on the joints too.  There was an extensive discussion of weight in a recent newsletter from a service dog school.

''Obesity is the number one nutritional disease affecting dogs. It's estimated that 25-45% of dogs in the US are obese. Studies have shown that joint and locomotive problems increase by 57%, circulatory problems by 74%, respiratory problems by 52%, skin problems by 40% and cancer by 50% in animals that are overweight.

Large breed dogs that are overweight also are more prone to developing hip dysplasia. Obesity is especially dangerous for young puppies, as their underdeveloped frame cannot support the extra poundage that it must carry.''

Some people feed unsalted green beans or unspiced canned pumpkin to fill up the dog.  I don't know if the dog is less hungry or not.  It may only make the owner feel better.

I usually support feeding common brands such as Science diet.  I have seen a study that showed dogs lose more weight on higher protein diets, Atkins type diet.  You could try a higher protein diet.
