i was wondering what a good book or dvd or anything that can help me trane my dog. I don't want to start off on the wrong foot

Your local library should have a selection.  Any book for beginners that advocates gentleness is good.  A local training class is better still, not obedience but pet training, show training or KC Good Citizens Puppy classes.  The KC can help out with Good Citizens training and training clubs in your area.
