Question

Eva
Hi,

We have just purchased a great dane puppy a week ago (she is now 9 weeks) and i am having doubts about her heritage. She is looking less like a great Dane then any of the puppies in the photos online, although she was purchased as a "purebred". We saw both parents of the pups - but i am wondering if that was the real father. Please help.

Answer
Jaye,

I am not sure how to help you with this problem. If you are having doubts about your puppies's parents, specifically the father, I would ask your breeder to provide you with a DNA test kit to prove that the father listed on the pedigree is indeed the sire of the puppy. You can order a DNA test kit online and ask her to take a swab sample from the Sire of the litter. You will then have to do the same with your puppy and send the test in. It will take approximately 3-4 weeks to get the results back but this is really the only way you will know with 100% certainty that the Sire listed on the paperwork is your puppy's father. The picture of her is not very clear, because she is bundled up in someone's arms. I cannot really see her body very well in the photo that was attached with this question. If I may ask, what is leading you to doubt that she is a purebred Dane? I cannot tell you based on the photograph that was sent if she is or is not a Dane, and even if you sent better pictures, I still would not be able to tell you with 100% certainty that she is unless a DNA sample was taken.

If this is something that you want to do I can more certainly send you some places where you can get a DNA test kit.

If you have any other questions please feel free to ask!

Good Luck
