Question
We have recently purchased a beautiful GD puppy. He is 12 weeks and sleeps inside at the moment. However, I think in the longer term he should not sleep in the house. I think he should be free to come inside from time to time, but not always. I am thinking of making a very large and insulated kennel for him. We live in Johannesburg (SA) and winter nights can get cold. Is this the right approach? Are there special considerations regarding the size, design of the kennel?

Answer
I am coming to Jo'burg to judge the dane club show on June 24, why not come and talk to the locals.  it will be at the Goldfields KC Showground, Bedford View, Johannesburg.  Further details from Susan Pankhurst of Rynfield, Nenoni 1501 tel 011 967 2397

We kennel our dogs until they get older but always in pairs.  One alone will not be happy.  You might consider an indoor kennel.  Our kennels are insulated and heated with draft screens and deep bedding made of shredded paper (our recycling effort).
