Question

Achilles
I have a 1 yr old male great dane and i have been having major problems getting him to gain weight. He weighs around 90lbs now but vet said he should be roughly 100-110 we've tried a few different foods as suggested by vet,pet store owner, great dane owners ext. And we alway switch him over to new foods properly so he doesn't get sick but nothing seems to be working. He is currently on Blue Buffalo. His ribs and spine show.We got him at 3 weeks and had to bottle feed him so idk of that could be playing a part in the weight gain issue. Took him to the vet and he is healthy just under weight. Im very frustrated with this situation i would love to take my dane out but im scared of what people will say about his weight. We also feed him 8 cups of food a day and he eats 3 times a day.please help!!

Answer
Have you tried adding cottage cheese and goats milk to his food? This has a high fat content and could help him put on the weight. Blue Buffalo has a high protein (28%) but the fat is 12% and he may need something with a higher fat content. He is very skinny from the picture that you sent me. I think that you should still take him out, I don't think anyone will judge you if they have the decency to ask you what is wrong with him. Could you tell me how much he eats on a daily basis? You need to be feeding him the prescribed amount for the weight that he should be, not the weight that he is at. So for Blue Buffalo he should be eating 8 cups a day, I would split that into 4 cups per feeding. Normally I feed two cups more if they are in significant weight loss. This would equal 10 cups a day. I would suggest if you have the ability to feed him three times a day to do that. This means that he will need to eat 4 Cups in the morning, 2 Cups mid-day and 4 Cups at night. I would also add the cottage cheese and goats milk. See if that helps, otherwise change him to a different food. Here is a link to the food I have had really good luck on. Hope it goes well and please keep me updated.
