My husband and I have a 5 month old merle great dane puppy and he cries/whines/and barks non-stop when he is left home alone.  When we come back home our ditry laundry will be pulled around the house, but nothing has even been chewed or destroyed.  He also doesnt have accidents when we are gone.  How can we get him to stop making so much noise?  The neighbors even have to call us because he is disturbing them!

Answer
It sounds like he's got some seperation anxiety. You should buy him a crate if you can afford one or find a small room to lock him in when you have to go away so he feels more secure. Practice leaving the room and coming back in very short time intervals-coming back before he reacts and gradually increasing the time you are away as he remains calm longer-so he realizes that even though you are leaving you always come back.It can take awhile for this to go away, not something that can be cured overnight. If you have sort of a routine that you do before you leave,go through that a few times a day when you aren't leaving so it doesn't necessarily mean you are goign to leave him alone when he hears the keys jingling for example.
Be sure to leave him with plenty of chewtoys and stuff to do while you are away,a few days a week of Doggie Daycare is another option.
My dane used to destroy things when we left him alone,he actually destroyed a real bed once that was in the room we locked him in! He grew out of it eventually and we let him have the entire house when we are away now. There is a light at the end of the tunnel even though it doesn't seem like it!!!
