Great Dane needs to urinate in the flowerbeds, not the grass.

Question
I have a three year old great dane. She is good about going in the yard but unfortunately, she urinates in my grass. I perfer she urinate in my flowerbeds. I have tried walking her out on a leash but she must get stage fright because she will not urinate. I have tried the yellow stake you put in the ground that smells like urine but that does not work either. Any suggestions? Is there something I can put on my lawn that will deter her from wanting to urinate in my grass.

When I first took ownership of the great dane, I had a "zip-line" set up so she was limited to only my deck and a nice sized flowerbed. The result was that she urinated in my house. I am tempted to try it again.  Thanks, SMP

Answer
Stephen,

If she has been taught from an early age to urinate on the grass, and now at some point(not sure how long you have had her) you are trying to retrain her to urinate in the flower beds, it is going to be quite a journey to retrain her to potty somewhere else.

If she has been going potty on the grass for the last two years, and you have had her for a short time, it is going to be a long and continuous process to retrain her.

It just takes persistence and praise. However, do not allow her to hold her urine for extended periods of time if she does not urinate in the flower beds, as this will end up causing a urinary tract infection.

It is a hard habit to break, because this is potty training all over again.

I hope this helps.
