Question
Bristol is 15 months now and I'm still struggling with pottying in the house.  Its not terrible but its enough to be a problem.  She mostly does it in my basement.  I replaced the carpet thinking maybe a previous residents pets did the same.  She quit doing it so often but she still does it on occasion.  What do i do?  She goes outside every morning before i leave, when i come home for lunch, and multiple times in the evenings.
I am also having a problem with her chewing on my walls.  Or whatever else she can get when I'm not home.  I had her in a kennel for a good portion of her puppy time but she started to panic and run scared when i would go to put her in there so i stopped using it.  I gave her free rein of the house and she destroyed everything she could so i tried just designating one room for her.  When i did this she started chewing on my baseboards and door frames and digging holes in the stucco.  It almost seems like she was trying to dig her way out.  I don't know what to do with her anymore.  I have tried every option i can think of but nothing works.  My mom has suggested putting her some Anxiety medication for when I'm not home.  When i am home she is a total angel and well behaved.  Except the barking.  So what would you suggest?

Answer
Morgan,

If you feel that your dog has anxiety I suggest using a homeopathic anxiety medication. The brand that I have had good luck with is HomeoPet Anxiety Separation. You can buy is here:

As far as her urinating inside the house, does she do this when you are home, or are not home? Have you had a chance to test her urine to make sure that she does not have a Urinary Tract Infection?

Unfortunately your Dane is still a puppy, and chewing comes naturally to them. I would suggest that you re-train her to go in her crate. In all seriousness and honesty, it is safer for her. If she happens to get into something and chew and swallow it, she could potentially be in danger of something becoming lodged in her throat or in her intestine. That will be a very invasive, very expensive surgery.

It will be for her benefit to be in the crate while you are not home. I have a Dane who is also a base board and frame chewer. Once we replaced these, he was no longer able to say out for extended periods of time while we were gone. He as a Colossal (Great Dane Size) Crate that he is in while we are away from the house.

Try the HomeoPet Anxiety meds, all you have to do is put a few drops in her water. But as far as the chewing is concerned, she is going to eventually grow out of it, but until she does, I would highly recommend going back to the crate.
