Question
I inherited a year-old male dane. He has been ignored, being put in the back yard to fend for himself. He is beautiful and AKC registered. But, he does not know how to walk on a leash. I am trying to teach him now that he is 120 lbs. Obviously he walks me. He is very sweet and starved for attention. What can I do to get him to stop pulling on the leash?

Answer
Persevere.  Find a local training club, that might help.

Space and time do not permit me to give you the bones of what is a ten week course but try this.

Put the collar/lead right up under the jaw bone so that you have control of the head and it will not hurt him.  Practice in your property walking on a slack lead but saying no and tugging the lead if he pulls away.  You should get through to him eventually.
