Question
We have a 9 year old great dane, we have had him since he was 9 weeks old.  He has been very sick over the last 7 months.  Our vet said that he has arthitis.  His back legs don't work real well anymore.  I don't want him to suffer.  When do I know when to let go.

Answer
Joyce,

Unfortunately this is the type of situation where many owners are so attached to their dogs they don't know when it is really the "right" time. The only thing that I can tell you is that when it is time you will know. Dogs have that look in their eyes, and once that sparkle is gone, you can finally tell when they are in pain. If he is going to the bathroom underneath himself and he stops eating and  drinking, then you know it is time to let them go...

Hopefully this will help you make the right choice for your dog, and remember either way, 9 years is a very good age for a Great Dane, so I am sure that you were doing something right and taking great care of him!

I apologize for not getting back with you sooner, it is a little difficult with a newborn to sit down between feeding and sleeping to answer emails!

Remember that whatever decision you make, your dog will always love you.
