Question

Schatzi
Hi, we have a beautiful, female, fawn 7 month old Dane named Schatzi. Her original food was the Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy. She liked the food but began growing rapidly and I was concerned about the high (28%) protein level. On that food, she never shed a drop of hair but she never had solid stools either. She was switched to EP Holistic Select for giant breed puppies. Good protein level (23%), but after about two weeks she began scratching & shedding so badly that I swept a blanket of hair off her couch every day, she began to stink up the house so bad it was almost nauseating, and stools were still not normal.  Vet says she has a clean bill of health and we just haven't found the right food yet. I read something that said Adult food would be fine for a Dane so we are now on Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul (Adult 23% protein). Ok, now she is shedding so much I have no idea how she has any hair left on her body and she thinks it's a fun game to eat her poo before I can get to it to pick it up. She has never done that before and I pick it up as soon as she drops it so the kids don't fall in it. Also, she eats 8 cups over 3 feedings per day but never seems satisfied and at 7 months and 90+ pounds she's definitely not starving. Think we need to find a food that the poor girl can live with, the vet always pushes royal canin but knows we like the holistic so we are just stuck. Any suggestions? Everybody has an opinion and we really don't know what to do. I believe it was the lamb formula that was making her stink really bad, because since she has been back on a chicken she no longer reaks. Have looked at an considered the natural balance LID but was told not to give it to her til she was at least a year. Hear that the Orijen is too high in everything. Nutro has high protein, Taste of the wild has mixed reviews (don't know a whole lot about that one) I believe Innova is owned by P&G and they are not a "DOG" concerned company, they are just out to make money, so that concerns me. Am I being an over protective Dane Mommy and reading too much into this or is there some sort of science to feeding this baby the right stuff? Please help?

Answer
Jennifer,

It seems that your veterinarian is right, you just have not found the right food for here. Here is a list of some of the foods that I have used in the past, it might be something that you will need to play around with but in the end these are excellent foods. You want to keep the protein below 24% and the same with the calcium and phosphorus levels. You don't want to do Taste of the Wild because that is grain free and a Dane baby does need the carbohydrates(IMO). I would suggest that you try Wellness or Solid Gold. Here are the formula's you can try-

Wellness Complete Health Super5Mix Chicken
Wellness Complete Health Super5Mix Whitefish and Sweet Potato
Solid Gold Wolf King Bison Large Breed Dog Food
Solid Gold MMillennia Beef n Barley Dog Food

I would try one of these and see how she does on them. Solid Gold has been around for about 30 years and pride themselves on customer satisfaction and the are a completely 100% Holistic line. Wellness is what I am currently feeding my 15 week old male Dane baby ans he is doing wonderfully on the food.

I hope this helps and good luck!!!Let me know what you decide and how she does. Remember, you normally will not see a change for about 45 days when you transition onto a new food, hair loss included.
