My girl is losing weight

Question
HI Ken,

I just got a fawn dane from rescue two weeks ago, she was underweight at 93 pounds when I got her and since I have gotten her she hasn't been eating and is down to 84 pounds.  I can see her ribs hips and shoulders.  I am quite worried about her.  I have given her chicken and the broth it was cooked in and she only eats half of it.  I have tried to mix ground beef in with her food also eggs and canned dog food.

This week we have just let her dry food out and she refuses it.  She often eats grass and throws up foamy yellow bile.  I have had her to the vet and he has run all kinds of tests but they always come back normal.

Any help would be great, oh she is heartworm positive.  She is on preventive but my vet will not treat her until she gains atleast 20 pounds. Thank you in advance.

Answer
I have a nasty feeling that there is nothing that can be done.  Probably the heart worm has been left too long.

I find that a brisket, boned and minced is sometimes palatable and fat enough to put weight on.

Hope things work out.

Next time make sure you pick a healthy dane.  If she was underwright there was obviously a problem.  Danes take well to kennels and eat well putting on weight.

Cheers
