Question

Sam
I own a 14 month old silver great Dane. he was bought from a breeder in Ohio, i have his birth records and the bill of sale. the gentlemen who bought him didn't know how to care for a Dane and Sam was neglected and underfed. he stands 30 inches at his shoulder and weighs 81 pounds. dispute his up bringing he is very loving and has become a member of our family. my question is: what is the safest way to put weight on him, i can feel his bones when i pet him. our local vet recommended steroids but i would rather not.  my only other concern is our 4 year old husky who isn't fixed, i know the fatal merle gene, but does it apply to half-breeds?

Answer
The safest way to put weight on your dog is to feed him a high quality dog food, that is medium protein (no more then 25%) and feed him two cups three times a day, morning, noon and evening. Your Great Dane is not a silver merle, his color is just simply Merle...there is not variations in the merle color.

I am not sure what you are asking me in the other question, it is in no way ok to breed these two dogs together...he needs to be neutered as the Merle color and the Merle gene are not something that needs to be bred...

It will also allow you to have your dog for a longer time as the risks of testicular cancer are much greater in an unaltered male Dane.
