Question
Hello Ken. Here is my second question regarding my black 2yr old male dane. I recently got him from a Dane rescue organization. It appears as if his previous owners didn't trim his nails very often and now they are pretty long (approx. an inch - some are a little longer). These nails can be very dangerous when playing or goofing around. One day I'm sure he's gonna stab my eye out. Anyway, what is the best way to get his nails back down to a reasonable (and safe) length? Thank you for your time.

Answer
Running on concrete is the best way.  Otherwise you will need to train him to stand while you trim them.  Use a nail trimmer with a stop on the back so that you only nip off a small amount each time.  Then trim them every few days until they are short enough.  If you cut off too much they will bleed profusely and he will not want you to do it again so be careful and gently.  Don't twist, use a smooth cutting action.  If it becomes difficult get the cutters sharpened.

An inch isn't too bad anyway.

You shouldn't be rough-housing with a dog that size, he will always beat you and that is not good for discipline.  Play should be outside with balls and sticks for throwing.
