Feeding 3 week old Great Dane Puppies

20 9:01:04

Question
My puppies are almost 3 weeks and their teeth have started to come in and their mom isn't feeding them as long I think do to the pain of their teeth, and I was hoping you could tell me is it ok to feed them softed hard dog food or should I feed them the puppy food in cans.  Im not sure and everyone I talk to about this tells me something different.  One breeder said not to feed them puppy food all.  So I am alittle confused about what to do this is the first time I have ever had a dog this big or this breed.

Answer
What you need to do is go to a pet supply store and get some puppy formula and either bottle feed them or see if they'll lap it up out of a bowl. At this age they still need mostly milk, you should be feeding the lactating mother puppy food though(pregnant females should also be fed puppy food) so that she and the pups get the nutrition they need. Don't feed them softened food for a few more weeks, when they are around 5 weeks of age.At the 5 week point you can MIX the food with the replacement milk and let it soften before serving it. You can get Esbilac puppy formula at petco, petsmart, fleet farm or online at www.drsfostersmith.com. Be sure to deworm them at 5 wks old too and give mom a break from the puppies occaisionally.
