Question
I have a 4 month old blue female dane, comparing her to other danes her size, she looks a bit short and thin. We leave food out for her, but she doesn't seem to be gaining weight or getting bigger. How big should she be at this age? also, what is the best food to feed her for her to get the nutrition she needs?

Answer
It's hard to say how big she should be without knowing her parents. I wouldn't compare her to others unless they are littermates adn even then they will vary in size. I think she should be around 80 lbs at 4 months, that's just a guess.
Don't leave food out all day because she will just pick at it and not get enough food which will keep her on the skinny side. At four months feed her 2-3 times a day,you can switch it to 1-2 when she is an adult which for Danes is at a year old.Danes tend to be skinny until they are about 1-1 1/2 because they are growing upward, they start filling out more after that point so don't worry too much about her being lanky, she's still young and growing. Also females are thinner than males, males are alot more bulky where females are always on the thin and narrow side. If you are still concerned in a few weeks after switching her feeding schedule about her weight gain there's no harm in getting her checked out by a vet to rule out medical problems. Dogs are sometimes thin when they have worms so make sure she has been dewormed since you got her.
