white danes

Can you please explain to me why most pure white danes are born either deaf or blind. I have purchased a blue merl and his sister is blind and no-one wanted her and we felt so sorry for her so we have adopted her, what am i in for?

Genetically white dogs tend to be deaf or blind or both.

The problems with deaf dogs is getting their attention to give them instructions.  Hand signals is fine if they are looking at you but if they are running into a busy main road they can't hear you tell them to stop.

This means they can never be let off the lead to run free and enjoy themselves except in secure premises.  Do you have a large garden with a high fence?
