What should I feed my dane?

Question
I have a 5 month old merle Great Dane and was wondering what food should I be feeding him? I have been feeding him Science Diet Large Breed Puppy, I know that its not recommended to feed a dane puppy food and I would like to get him off of it so looking for the best food. I had mentioned Solid Gold and Nutro to the vet and he said not to feed them that because it causes very runny stools.

Also he is a very calm and loving dog but when it comes time to feed he just goes crazy running around and whining while I am away getting the food then once I get back in the room he sits and stays until I tell him and then he devours the food. Is there anything to help with that?

In the same area when i give him water he will drink the whole bowl then he throws it up. He does not throw up much but still does. Do you have any help there?

Thanks, Matt

Answer
Matt,

Please look at my previous posts for information regarding nutrition, I have answered this question numerous times and just recently about a week ago so you should be able to get all your answers from there...

Nutro and Solid Gold are very good foods, and they do not cause runny stools so I am not sure why your vet would tell you that. I always depends on the dog but if you transition them the right way there should not be a problem. Make sure you do a formula that is 25-25% Protein or less.

If he whines when you get ready to feed him sit back down and start over again, every time he starts to whine and get crazy, stop making his food until he settles down. You can also just have him sit or lay down WHILE you are preparing the food as well.

If he is drinking the whole bowl and throwing up you need to give him water in moderation, only put water at the bottom of the bowl and let him drink that, then 5 minutes later give him a little more...Do not fill up the whole bowl at one time...
