Question
Hi,
I have a six year old great dane who is in alot of pain. He will wake up and start screaming in pain and will not put full weight on left front paw. The vet took x rays of everything, all normal.no arthritis, or bone cancer, still waiting on thyroid test, but the vet is baffled.Sometimes his legs shake alot and today he is knuckling that left paw. Vet gave him metacam and tramadol. the vet said he has the best looking joints she ever saw in a dane. Could this be a neurological problem?
can you suggest something that maybe the vet hasnt thought of?
           thank you

Answer
I cannot tell you whether or not this is a neurological problem without knowing your dogs pedigree and if something may have happened to him at birth.

I would just listen to your vet or maybe even go to a specialist. But if your vet cannot find a solution and has told you that there are no problems with arthritis or bone cancer, I cannot really give you anything that you don't already know.

There maybe a deformity but that would have been seen on the x-ray. I would possibly try to give him some extra glutosamin and condroitin for his joints. He may just have a sprain or bruising on that paw and that you would not be able to see on the x-ray.

He also could have pulled a muscle or may just have a cramping in the muscle, almost like a person hitting their funny bone, but instead it is in his paw.

I hope that helps you a little bit but there really is not anymore information that I can give you.
