Question
We have recently brought a new GD puppy home. Her KC tranfer document has come trough as mismarked Harliquin. This did not matter to us as she is only going to be a pet, my years of showing are over. Her breeder told us she was classed as a Merlikin, not a Harliquin mismarked. On her KC document it states that she is R-Progeny and not eligible to transfere registration. Why is this? is it because she is classed as mismarked and not eligible to show under the KC breed guide lines.
Also I knew you from years ago when I use to show in the Midlands region.
Many thanks fiona

Answer
There is no such thing as a Merlikin.  This is a made up name like fawniquin for fawn mismarked harlequins.

The registration papers are so marked in order to stop people breeding from non-standard stock.  The standard colours, as you should know from your show years, are fawn, brindle, black, blue and harlequin (defined as white underground with black or blue patches.  Any other combination is classed as mismark.  Most of the breeders try to keep the colours pure to eliminate mismarks but there are those who breed anything to anything either to make money or because they are stupid or they do not know why we are in the fancy or they have the misguided idea that a litter helps the bitch.

The papers are marked like this because unregistered puppies do not fetch such high prices and the money grabbers are dissuaded from breeding.
