Danes and Cockatoos

Question
Hello, we planning the addition of a companion dane to our family sometime
this year, and would like to know about compatibility with large Cockatoos.

I have had Danes previously, last one passed 18 years ago of old age. Since
then I have taken in 2 rescue cockatoos, one Moluccan aged 37 and a lesser
sulpher crested age 17, and 16 year old Lesser as a companion for my wife.
Non of them seem bothered by friends dogs visiting, of course they are all
watched as they have free range of the house unless they are asleep or we are
out.

We know better than to bring a "birding" dog into the family, and want the
companionship that a dane offers, but I have no idea of how they are around
birds. Our last danes were wonderful around pets that they grew up around.

We are planning a registered (CKC or AKC)  puppy from a reputable breeder,
and have done a lot of homework to prepare, but I have not seen any
information on how they react with large birds. The breeders we are working
with do not have any experience with danes and birds.

We have a large ocean front home here in Victoria BC, Canada with a 1/2 acre
forested yard to play in. I work from home, and we have 5 year old twins just
starting school this year. We are hoping that we will be a suitable family for a
dane once more so the children can grow with him.

Would you please email us the diet information that you have referenced in
many of your answers. We are most interested in ensuring we have a suitable
diet for our dane, and like you we have little confidence in pet food
manufacturers and their marketing schemes. We are looking to balance a
suitable food with raw food.

Thank you for your information. We have read most of your site and
questions and will make constant use as a reference.

Regards,
Peter

Answer
We had conures for a time and we had to take care as the birds bullied the dogs.  When walking around the floor if there was a foot in their way they just pecked at it to get it lifted; they never walked round.

I presume you will have had my other reply so good luck.  By the way, birding dogs dont attack live birds only point or retrieve.
