Question

Kitty
Hi,
I'm concern about my Great Dane puppies because she was only 13week when my vet said it was ok to spay her so I did.I went to the emergency room because she was dripping blood from her stitches and I told the Dr. that we spay her he was so mad he couldn't believe someone will spay this early at that point I felt bad because I never ask anyone or tried to get a second opinion .The Dr. said to check onlineor to ask my breeder  what type of supplements she need to replace her hormones. I called her but she said that my dog should be fine. What should I do? Should I give her supplements or is that bad for her

Answer
Your Great Dane does not need supplements. Although I would never recommend pediatric spay for a Giant Breed. They should be spayed/neutered between 6-8 months.

It has been believed by some breeders that early spay/neuter stunts a Giant Breed dogs growth, but there are no studies to prove this.

Although Orthopedic Surgeons for dogs recommend waiting until their bones are a little more mature and in the later stages of growth to avoid other bones diseases.

I would suggest that you take some time to find a NEW veterinarian that has Great Dane or Giant Breed experience because it seeems to me that your current vet does not. Since we are on topic about vet experience, I wonder if your vet also recommended that your Dane puppy eat puppy food, if so I would switch to ADULT food immediately are really look for a new veterinarian that will not steer you wrong.

Some veterinarians can do more harm then good to your dog, especially a Dane as they are more prone to a variety of diseases and disorders.

Hope that answers your question.

I apologize in advance for not answering sooner, I am currently out of town for a funeral and have not had the opportunity to look into my email since last Sunday. Have a good one!
